ABSTRACT:
Modern therapeutic system has been undergoing a tremendous change in recent times. Amidst the recent developments, stem cell therapy is going to be one of the most promising one to treat many of the genetic diseases as well as organ failures. The stem cells achieved its importance as a source of treating many of genetic diseases just because of its totipotent nature. Totipotency is the ability of any cell to become the choice of cell want to be developed. Recent studies show that almost 75 genetic diseases and more than 20,000 transplantations could be achieved by using stem cells. Present study has been conducted among the final year B.Sc., Nursing students at P.S College of Nursing, Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, India. Quantitative approachand quasi experimental was followed by the students, where one group pre- test, post- test design was adopted. Forty students were selected by convenient sampling method. Structured questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge. In structured teaching programme, post-test was conducted by the seventh day. According to the pre- test results, no one had adequate knowledge, wereas 40 % had inadequate knowledgeand 60 percent of the population had a moderate knowledge. From the post- test analysis it is evident that, 55% of the students were aware of stem cell therapy and 40 percent of them had a moderate knowledge. The percentage of population with inadequate knowledge brought down to a level of5%. The results reveal the fact that the structural teaching programme on stem cell therapy was very effective.

INTRODUCTION:
The living world is composed of cells. A cell is the basic unit of any form of life, which provides the structure as well as the site of various functions, they bound together to form tissue, organ and organ system respectively.
Stem cells are the master cells, from which all types of cells being formed. Stem cell therapy is a breakthrough in modern regenerative medicine (1).
The ability of stem cells to self-renew and give rise to subsequent generations with variable degree of differentiation capabilities offer significant potential for generation of tissues and that can replace diseased and damaged parts of the body with minimal risk of rejection and side effects (2).
Hematopoietic cell transplant of umbilical cord origin is a curative for various inherited malignant and nonmalignant disease like Fanconi anemia, aplastic anemia, leukemia, congenital abnormalities like immune disorders, lymphoma, RBC platelet abnormalities, myeloproliferative disorder and solid tumors (3,4). It also can be a cure against ailments such as neuroblastoma, retinal blastoma, and lysosomal storage disease (5).
OBJECTIVE:
To assess the pre and post- test knowledge on stem cell therapy among final year B.Sc., nursing students.
To identify the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on stem cell therapy.
To associatepost- test level knowledge among students with selected demographic variables.
Hypothesis:
H1: There will be a significant difference between pre and post-test knowledge on stem cell therapy among the students.
H2: There will be a significant association in the post-test knowledge on stem cell therapy among students.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
An evaluative approach with quasi experimental of pre and post -test design was used. Convenient sampling technique was used to select the sample of 40 students. Structured questionnaire schedule was used to assess the knowledge of the students. The structured teaching programme was given on the same day for one hour with the help of flash cards. The post test was conducted on the 7th day of teaching programme.

Bar diagram shows the percentage of knowledge acquired by the students on stemcell therapy over pre and post teaching programme. It shows that, in pre- test around 60% of the students were not had adequate knowledge on stem cell therapy and 40 % of them had moderate knowledge. None of them had adequate knowledge on it. The post test results reveal that 55% students had adequate knowledge in stem cell therapy and 40% had moderate knowledge. And it was decreased to just 5% with inadequate knowledge.
The table shows the mean score of pre and post-test level of knowledge on stem cell therapy among final year nursing students were 8.3 and 15.4 respectively. The standard deviation score of pre and post- test on the subject knowledge was 3.54 and 3.47 respectively. The “t“ value obtained is 0.26, this value is significant at 0.05 level. From the above mean score it is evident that subject knowledge on stem cell therapy has been increased after structured teaching programme. Hence the findings support the research hypothesis (H1).
Chi score analysis revealed that there was no significant association between the association between the post- test knowledge with their demographic variables such as age, sex, religion and type of family. There was a significant association between acquiring knowledge and area of residence by a level of 0.05 level.
CONCLUSION:
It is thus concluded that structured teaching programme is an effective strategy in bringing about the desired change in gaining knowledge regarding stem cell therapy among final year nursing students.
